HOWTO Install Linux on an ASUS M6BNe
I reveived my new Asus notebook about six months ago, in about five peices. Since then, I have had a chance to run two different versions of Ubuntu Linux on it, and I must say I am impressed. We’ve come a long way from the days when it took pages and pages of detailed instructions and config files just to get a network connection. In short, it pretty much Just Works.
This article aims to be a step-by-step walkthrough for people with little Linux experience, so if it seems a little pedantic to you Linux gurus, that’s because it is. Those of you looking for just the tech specs and gritty details can find them at the bottom.
The most important step in dual-booting with Windows if a very simple one, but can be easily overlooked, especially when one wants to dig right in:
Install Windows first.
Granted, this is not nessecary if you never intend to put Windows on the machine, but if you think you might ever want to (and you know who you are), go ahead and take the time now. I’ll wait. If you don’t, you’re in for a mess of trouble when you try later.
So now that we all have Windows installed, let’s get started. The first thing we need is a Linux CD. Go get Ubuntu 5.10, “The Breezy Badger”, from the Ubuntu download site. Use a mirror near you. Anyway, use the program of your choice to burn that puppy to a cd, and we’re ready to go.
